The Multi-Purpose Amplifier (HS100A) works with most phones that have a modular handset connector. It features a sliding volume control, a headset/handset switch, a mute switch, and a built-in headset stand.

The Two-Prong Carbon Amplifier (HS101A) is designed for phones that have a two-prong headset port. It has a three-position volume control that locks your volume preference in place.

Even the best analog headsets are limited by the quality of the sound card they’re connected to. Sound cards reside inside a CPU case close to components like CD-ROM drives, graphics cards, memory chips, and hard drives, which contribute to high EMI noise that adversely affects the majority of sound cards.

If you think it’s noisy inside your desktop CPU, wait until you get inside a laptop computer where electronic components are even closer together! Because all this noise affects computer sound cards, you’ll probably want to avoid the traditional analog sound card inputs. That’s where USB comes in.

When you connect a headset to a PC’s USB port, you bypass the sound card entirely, and this connection results in a cleaner and stronger signal. But if you want to optimize your audio communications, don’t settle for an analog headset. Instead, opt for a digital model.

The key to high-quality PC sound is keeping the audio data in digital form as long as possible and processing it to analog sound outside the noisy confines of the computer. Audio data sent digitally from the PC travels via the USB to a digital headset, where the data is converted by a DSP (digital signal processor) into analog waveforms that you hear through the headset speakers.

The result is clear, clean sound. If you’re serious about communication, a digital headset is well worth the investment.

Many headset ear capsules fit awkwardly in the ear and make telephone professionals uncomfortable. If you wear a headset all day, that can really affect productivity. When choosing a headset, make sure the ear capsule has a hinge on it. This design enables you to adjust the headset for all-day comfort and better productivity.

The difference between consumer- and commercial-grade phone-line managers is more than just a matter of size. The number of ports, phone lines, and connected communications equipment possible with commercial-grade devices is larger—as many as 24 devices on 8 lines!

But flexibility is the key factor. The extra features, like programmability and built-in surge protection, set commercial line managers apart. Some models feature connections for three devices to each phone line, available on a first-come, first-served basis. And data-collection transmissions can also be run on the same lines used for voice calls, so remote business sites can transmit information for centralized data collection over one phone line—no dedicated line necessary.
